Trying Authentic Chinese Skewers in Zhengzhou – A Local Street Food Adventure

If you’re ever wandering through the streets of Zhengzhou looking for something spicy, flavorful, and full of local character, you have to try Chinese skewers – or “chuan chuan xiang”. In this episode, I visited a popular local skewer spot and documented the whole experience!

📍 First Impressions

This place is bustling and feels very local. The decor is simple, but the smell of chili oil and pepper hits you the moment you walk in. It’s clearly a favorite among nearby workers, students, and food lovers alike. I sat down and was immediately given a menu that lists every kind of skewer you can imagine – meats, vegetables, even tofu skin.

Here’s how it works: You pick your skewers – I went for chicken wings, beef, enoki mushrooms wrapped in bacon, and lotus root. Each stick costs just a few RMB. The waiter takes your picks and tosses them into a pot of spicy broth or fries them – your choice. I chose the classic spicy hotpot style, of course.

While waiting, I could see steam rising from everyone’s table. The vibe was hot and exciting, in every sense.

The food came quickly, and wow – the spice hits hard, but it’s addictive. The chicken wings were tender and soaked up the broth flavor perfectly. The lotus root added a crunchy texture, and the enoki mushrooms had that delicious umami aftertaste. My favorite? The beef skewers – super juicy with just the right balance of fat and lean.

Pro tip: dip them in the crushed peanuts and garlic powder mix they offer – it elevates the whole experience.

🙌 Final Thoughts

Zhengzhou never disappoints when it comes to street food. This skewer place is a must-visit if you’re into bold flavors and eating like a local. I’ll definitely be back to try their grilled options next time.

I captured the sizzling sounds, boiling broth, and my real-time reactions as I tried each dish. Watch the full video on my YouTube channel.
